Surgical Approach

Drinking water and chewing, swallowing, and digesting food are the best ways to obtain fluids and nutrients. However, sometimes drinking and eating “the regular way” are simply not possible. For people who have problems chewing, swallowing, or digesting their food, fluids and nutrients must be provided another way.

  • Three alternate methods of providing fluids and nutrition include:
  1. intravenous (IV) therapy
  2. enteral nutrition
  3. total parenteral nutrition (TPN, hyperalimentation)
